What inspired you to cut hair and become a barber? A close friend of mine told me that I always had such cute hairstyles and should do hair.
What is your favorite part of your job? Having fun with my clients & the crew I work with.
What is your favorite product to work with right now? I love American Crew Defining Paste. I can use on almost any client and love the results!
What men’s hairstyle trends are we seeing right now? The guys we are seeing in the Broadway shop want cuts with more texture and natural finish. Younger dudes want longer styles that are trendy, but low maintenance.
What hair and skincare tips would you recommend to guys? Use a good shampoo and conditioner, none of that cheap stuff! And dude, get some SPF!!!
Congratulations to Kelsi Bates, a Weldon Barber in Downtown Spokane for winning 3rd place in the IECA Hair Competition. This year was Kelsi’s second time placing at the competition. Nice Job Kelsi! Enjoy this a quick interview with Kelsi and take home some of her hair tips.
Tell us about the competition. What style did you cut?
I had my model dressed up as Maverick from Top Gun. I cut a tight fade on the sides and left it long and piecey in the front. To achieve the style I used Aveda Pomade on his damp hair to create that messy look with high shine and medium hold.
What kind of guy does this style work for?
This style is really great for anyone, but looks best with masculine facial features. Use pomade to slick hair back for a more sophisticated, professional look or tousle your hair for a trendier look.
Any recommendations for Weldon guys that you’d like to share?
I would say that all guys should use the right shampoo and conditioner for their hair. The right shampoo and conditioner will vary depending on the guy, but it will keep hair manageable and keep scalps healthy (so guys can hold on to their hair as long as possible). I like Aveda’s Pure Formance Shampoo and Conditioner for most hair types because it targets itchy, flaky or even oily scalps resulting in fantastic, soft hair.
Alright guys, we know that grooming connotates something that should be done to your neighbor’s poodle. However, it’s something that both YOU and Frou Frou need to keep in mind. It’s important to keep those nails cleaned and clipped, keep nose hair at bay and take care of your physical appearance.
Unfortunately, most of the grooming tools you’d typically find aren’t fit for a man (FYI a man’s nails are much larger in size than a woman’s) and they certainly don’t look manly.
Meet ACE grooming tools. These tools are the grooming equivalent of your hammer and tool kit.
At Weldon, we’ve got your:
- ACE Dual Action Nose and Ear trimmer
- ACE Facial Grooming Kit
- ACT Nail and Toenail Clippers
Check out the tools and start using nail clippers built for the manly man (but remember, this manly man is not hidden by unclipped nails and unsightly nose hair; he’s lookin’ pretty good).

Did you hear? Antonio Banderas stopped by Weldon Barber in Downtown Spokane the other day! He is in town to film “The Big Bang” and came to Weldon to pick up some products. Jennifer helped him out and he purchased Sharps Kid Glove Oil Free Pre-Shave Stick , an amazing product for use under your shave gel. It creates a clear protective barrier for a close shave without the nicks. So…next time you see Antonio on the big screen check out his face. We’re gonna bet that it’s nothing but smooth.
-Shampoo and condition your beard to make your hair soft and therefore much more likely to be kissed! A great option is the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree line.
-Use an anti-acne cleanser such as Aveda’s Outer Peace Foaming Cleanser to create less irritation and flaking.
-Use a clear shave gel and a good trimmer to keep your beard clean and minimize those little shaving mishaps! Weldon recommends Sharps Kid Glove Shave Gel for a detail oriented shave.
-Have your Weldon Barber shape your beard! An uneven beard is…well, unattractive. A professional shave can make you go from Grizzly Adams to Gerard Butler and trust the women guys…that’s a good thing!
USE A GOOD SHAVE CREAM. From the Weldon Barbers on the South Hill
Often times guys don’t want to shave. It’s not that they don’t love the feeling of a freshly shaven face, but shaving is associated with a hassle and uncomfortable redness.
When shaving at home it is umperative to use quality shaving cream and aftershave. It will not only eliminate irritation and razor burn, but will also moisturize your skin. We like the Art of Shaving Shaving Cream and After-Shave Balm. These products are designed to cater to individual skin types and are available in unscented, lavender, sandalwood and lemon essential oils. No more skin irritation from shaving, no more terrible smelling aftershave.

Use a good shaving brush!
Don’t get scared. Although they may look like your wife’s blush brush, your shaving brush is really man’s best friend. The primary use of the brush is to get a full lather of shaving cream on your face, but it does more than that. It absorbs hot water and mixes the water with your shaving cream for a smooth shave.
Use your brush and stroke back and forth, up and down across your face and neck. The hot water and shaving cream combo creates a thick emollient lather for moisture and maximum coverage.Your shaving brush also exfoliates and soothes your skin, something your fingers definitely can’t do. Best of all, by stroking up and down, you lift your whiskers so that they are standing upright in your lather–perfect for a razor burn-free shave.
Our favorite brushes are The Art of Shaving’s Badger Brushes. They’ve got some different styles, but these brushes are ideal for attaining the perfect lather…plus they’re soft on your skin. Who says shaving has to be unpleasant? Grab yourself a quality shaving brush and you might just have fun.

Here are the basics. No need to delve into the plethora of styles…the buzz, the shag, the Clooney. For this post it’s just your basics–short, medium and long cuts.
Short cuts are ideal for a low-maintenance guy–the kind looking for a wash and go style. It can make you look younger and for the most part, your hair will never look messy. Best product for your short cut? Aveda Man Pure-Formance Grooming Clay
Mid-length hair cuts are another great option. You get that natural, easy going look and can play around with different styles and textures. Mid-length cuts can be classic or they can be trendy–just depends on what you’re like. The best cut if you’re in limbo on what to do with your hair. Best product for mid-length hair? American Crew Tea Tree Firm Hold Styling Cream give light control that’s natural and manageable.
Long hair cuts can be either trendy or easy going. Whichever look you’re going for, keep in mind–just because your hair is long doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep it cut and well-maintained. Best product for long hair? Jack Black High Definition Pomade is a great choice for a sleek, stay put look.
What style will work best for you? It really depends on the individual. Consult your Weldon Barber for ideas!

What inspired you to cut hair and become a barber? I was a homecare attendant for a lady with a disability. She liked how I cut her hair better than anyone else, she suggested I go to Cosmetology school.
What are your favorite products to work with right now? The Paul Mitchell line. It’s new and exciting. I really loved the class we just had about all the new products.
What men’s hairstyle trends are we seeing right now? Any favorites for you? Lots of texture and a bit messy. I love the creativity.
What hair and skincare tips would you recommend to guys? Try new products to achieve different looks and always moisturize your skin.
Balmy summer weather is replaced by the crisp fall breeze, long yellow buses now inhibit the way to work and we’re saying sayonara to buzz cuts for something with a bit more warmth. Fall is here and we are smack dab in the middle of back to school season. Here are some Weldon tips for the great season that so many retailers favorably call: BTS.
1. Products for Fall-
Weldon Pick: The Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Line-This line is ideal for the season. The early summer sun won’t be here to wake you up, but “the revitalizing tingle of Tea Tree Special, the citrus sensation of Tea Tree Lemon Sage, and the soothing scent of Tea Tree Lavender Mint” sure will. Essential tea tree oil is great for back to school as it stimulates the hair and skin while combating problem skin and oily scalps.
2. Father and Son Special- Schedule your cut with Dad or bring in your sons and receive a father-son 10% discount courtesy of Weldon Barber! All stores qualify.
3. Student Discounts-Since it’s no longer appropriate to have your buddy “buzz” your head, come in and bring your valid student ID for 20% off products and services at Weldon. Student discounts apply at all Weldon stores on select days.
Thank you Spokane for voting Weldon Barber as the best barbershop in The Pacific Northwest Inlander! Talk about a pat on the back. We’re so glad that you enjoy the products and service we offer at Weldon. Our staff works so hard to create a welcoming atmosphere and provide the highest quality service. It feels good to be recognized. Thanks Man!
Congrats to all the other winners of the Pacific Norhtwest Inlander’s Best Of!
AND Thank you Spokane!
Meet Elicia.

-Managed South Hill shop
-Assistant Manager of the downtown Spokane shop
-Manager of the downtown Spokane shop
-Regional Manager in Seattle area
-Currently a Senior Barber in Kirkland and Regional Educator for American Crew
What inspired you to cut hair and become a barber? I kind of just fell into it. I thought I would cut hair to pay for college, but then it turned into something I loved! I found out that I could do something I love and get paid for it!
What is your favorite part about working at Weldon Barber? All of it! I love my clients and get excited to see them…they’re like my friends. And I love the people I work with; we have a little family here at Weldon. It’s really just a good package deal for me. It’s also great to work with the other barbers, train them, and of course work with hair. I am probably the biggest advocate for Weldon Barber. I love my job and I love this company.
What are your favorite products to work with right now? I really like to work with American Crew Forming Cream and Fiber. I also have a new favorite–anything that smells like Lemon Sage for Paul Mitchell. I use the body wash and I got my boyfriend the hand cream. It smells so good. One last great product we carry is Sharps Shave Gel. It’s aloe based and pushes the follicle of the hair up for a close, clean shave. It also goes on clear making it perfect if you need to do any detailing. It is the best shave gel I’ve ever used.
What are the best men’s hairstyles? In my opinion, guys like lean looking hair styles. Anything you can do to lean out the style will give them that desired masculine shape.
What hair and skincare tips would you recommend to guys? Use conditioner! Guys hair gets so brittle, dry and fuzzy so it’s great to add that element of moisture. I love the Lemon Sage Conditioner. A last tip: listen to your barber! Your barber will be able to give you all the hair and skincare tips tailored to your specific needs.
Here’s a Weldon Shaving tip from Elicia in Kirkland:
When you’re shaving be sure to shave with the grain first. Next stroke take the razor against the grain for a smooth, close shave. Your hair may grow differently across your face so take the time to look at the growth pattern to prevent razor burn!
We know that most of the time you guys don’t like to shave. It’s the hassle of doing one more thing, right? But here’s a new perspective we’d like you to adopt–consider shaving like brushing your teeth. It’s a necessary part of your daily routine! Your girlfriends and wives will thank us for this…
So, wakeup, shower (with a quality shampoo AND conditioner), SHAVE (using a pre-shave and exfoliating scrub), apply deodorant and brush those pearly whites. Looks like that shave fits into your morning perfectly!
SKIN
1. Follow a specific skin care regimen. A simple regimen to follow is Sharps Daily Prep. Start with the Daily Prep Foaming Face Wash, followed by the Skin Tuner, Daily Prep Tuning Face Lotion.
2. Wear sunscreen. Trade out the Daily Prep Tuning Face Lotion for Sharps Dail Prep Oil-Free Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 15 to get in some good old SPF.
HAIR
1. Update your style: If you’ve got a full head of hair, instead of parting your hair to one side, push it forward. Use American Crew’s Defining Paste and use your hands to pull hair to the front. Add some texture with your fingers and the Defining Paste for a more modern.
2. Go lean on the sides: If you get your hair cut shorter and leaner on the sides it will slim out your entire face.
3. Camoflague: Take care of those pesky gray hairs with combed in color. At Weldon we offer Camouflage Color. It will camouflage your grays and blend with your hair…don’t worry, just because you’re adding a little color doesn’t mean you don’t have to look like Elvis!
Ahh…football season is back. Time for tailgate parties, touchdowns, hot wings on Monday nights and, yes, another year of Brett Favre. Whether you are a crazy fan of the Seahawks, the Cougs or the G Prep Bullpups–we’ve got some tips for sporting some team spirit this year.
First off let’s just say that we encourage all the team spirit you can muster. Wear your Matt Hasselbeck jersey or embrace the “painted stomach” look. But, if you’d like to take it to the next level, here’s a hair tip from some folks that know hair: check out ICE Spiker Colorz by Joico. It’s a temporary hair color that washes out with a shampoo, but it’s also got amazing hold to achieve whatever style your looking for. Perhaps a purple and gold fauxhawk that screams “Go Dawgs!” or a
Weldon’s got your Spiker colorz for whatever team you’d like to support. Spiker comes in blue, pink, white, red, metallix gold, metallix blue, metallix green, metallix silver, vapor white, techno pink and techno blue.

Happy Veteran’s Day! In celebration of the men and women who serve and have served this country, today’s post is dedicated to the flat top.
Now, we know that technically the military haircut is the high and tight with extremely short sides. The flat top is a similar style to the high and tight, but can be adapted to different lengths. It’s a classic, clean look that balances precision and strength, a great haircut for any guy.
The flat top is a great look, but it’s essential to ask around and find a barber who is well versed in cutting flat tops. We’ve got at least one barber at each Weldon Barber who has perfected their flat tops, so be sure to call ahead and ask so you can schedule with a specialist.
Tawney from the South Hill Weldon provides some insight on the benefits and downsides of the flat top (P.S. Feel free to schedule your flat top with Tawney!).
Benefits:
-The flat top is a low maintenance cut that always looks polished, even if you just jumped out of bed.
-In order to style your hair all you need is some American Crew Fiber or Defining Paste. If you’ve been wearing a flat top for a while now, you may not have to use any styling products at all.
Downsides:
-In order to maintain your flat top a cut every 2-3 weeks is advised.
-Since the flat top is a difficult cut to achieve, you need to schedule your appointments with the right barber!
As a thank you to both former and current military we offer 20% off all Weldon services at every shop, every day.
Listen guys…we know it’s easy to say “to-may-to”, “to-mah-to” when it comes to shaving. We live in a word with a plethora of cheap disposable razors, abrasive after shave lotions and itchy synthetic shaving brushes. But when it comes to your face, there is no reason to endure red, bumpy razor burn for a few bucks. Although it may not be as inexpensive as using your fingers, we love a genuine badger hair shaving brush.
It may sound a bit over-the-top…like your Grandmother’s giant mink coat, but a genuine badger hair brush can better be compared to a genuine pig skin football. It’s the real thing, it’s high quality and it handles quite nicely!
Use a genuine badger hair brush rather than a cheap boar’s hair brush (take a second to think of boar’s hair…yes, it is stiff and prickly). Badger hair is comfortable on your face and holds water to ensure the perfect lather. Bigger badger hair brushes hold more water and create a thick later more quickly, but a smaller one will work too. Just soak your brush in hot water for a few seconds, get some shaving cream on there and brush it up and down your face until you’ve got a nice, frothy lather.
At Weldon we’ve got all kinds of badger hair brushes (some available at our locations and some we can order special for you!) in different prices and levels of quality.
Here are your options for a nice shave.
Pure Badger Brush: The hair for this brush typically comes from the tails and the back of the badger The hair is gray and it is an ideal option for a great shaving brush without a huge price tag.
Fine Badger Brush: The fine badger brush comes from the back of the badger. It has a cone-like structure so the tips are thinner than at the base of the hairs. Fine badger brushes are softer and create a better lather. They are more expensive because the hair is rare! You’ll be able to tell if you’ve got this kind of brush because the color gradient is light-dark-light.
Silvertip Badger Brush: The ultra-premium, rather expensive brush is the Silvertip. The hair comes from the neck and is the softest, rarest and most expensive kind of badger hair. This is the most luxurious option of Fine Badger Brushes. In the winter this neck hair gets extremely light tips-hence, the Silvertip.
Now that you know more than you ever cared to learn about shaving brushes and badger hair, ask our barbers about the amazing Art of Shaving brushes and make your morning shave a pleasant experience. No disposable razors of rough shaving brushes allowed.
Thought we’d share our #1 product at Weldon Barber on the blog today. Unfortunately we have more the one! So, here are our six “#1″ products at Weldon.

Left to Right: Senior Barber and American Crew Educator, Elicia Leivia, Dana Ward, co-owner of Weldon Barber, David Raccuglia, founder of American Crew and Steven Ward, co-owner of Weldon Barber.
The above photo is from an American Crew event in Seattle. A few members of the Weldon team spent the evening with David Raccuglia, the founder of the world’s most popular men’s grooming line, American Crew. Raccuglia is not only the founder of American Crew, but he is also a phenomenal barber, hairdresser and photographer (he actually shoots all of American Crew’s photography!).
Four of our most popular products at Weldon are American Crew. It’s nearly impossible to find a guy who doesn’t like American Crew Fiber, Forming Crew or Defining Paste for styling his hair. We love that David and American Crew have considered guys in the world of hair…if every guy might still be stuck using the wife’s mousse. Thanks American Crew.
We also came across this interview with David Raccuglia from About.com and thought we would share a piece of advice from Raccuglia himself:
Dave Alexander (About.com): “David, like me, you’re moving into middle age. You always appear to be very stylish and somewhat cutting edge. What advice do you give clients looking to maintain an edge as they get older?”
David Raccuglia : “I’m going to be 50 this year and I’ve got a lot of guy friends who look at me as being this very stylish guy and the think of themselves as regular Joes and the advice I give them is always very simple. To me, style and trend are such a different thing. I think for a man to be stylish is very easy — a little bit of facial hair, growing your sideburns down a little bit longer, taking a good look at a trend and adapting it to your style as opposed to abandoning your style for a trend. Guys who are balding can get a great haircut with a clean taper in the back. Go to a stylist who understands head shape and male-specific design. Don’t fall into a category where you’re comfortable. Push it, you know. Every guy I know has the opportunity to be stylish and it’s really simple things. I think facial hair can be one of the most attractive things on a guy. It’s such a simple way for a guy to change his look. What length depends on the face of the guy.
If you look back to the 30s, 40s or 50s, a very stylish time, men tried a lot harder. Guys today get a little sloppy and comfortable. No disrespect, but leave your golf clothes for the golf course. And hair is so important. I don’t understand when somebody says to me, “oh it’s so expensive to go to a stylist,” but they go to Starbucks for a $3 latte six days a week. That’s $90 on a coffee habit! So, tell me what’s more imporant, your hair or your coffee habit? I go to 7-Eleven to get a $.50 cup of coffee for my caffeine and go get a $90 haircut. I just think it’s so important to be relevant and understand just what a statement your hair makes.”
Pretty good advice guys…so if you’d like to check out the rest of the interview, click here.
